It’s the Year of the Goat, Sheep, Ram

As people around the world celebrate the Lunar New Year, there’s some discussion as to just what year it is. It depends on who you ask. It seems that the character in question can be interpreted as either a sheep, goat, or ram. Each has slightly different characteristics, so according to a BBC story, people choose the one they feel best suits.

I have been invited by a university to a reception to celebrate the Year of the Goat. My Snapfish Lunar New Year cards stated that it was the Year of the Sheep, and the U.S. Postal Service declared it the Year of the Ram on their holiday stamps. President Obama played it safe in his goodwill message and made no mention of the animal. In any case, for millions of people around the world and in the U.S., this is a time of celebration and is considered one of the most important holidays of the year.

Families and friends gather, some will visit temples, attend festivals, see parades and light fireworks. Red envelopes (hong bao) with money will be given as gifts and lots of special foods will be eaten. To learn more about new year celebrations, click here for an article from the Asia Society.

Happy Lunar New Year! Last year, I had the good fortune to be in Vietnam as the country prepared for Tết–Lunar New Year. People were buying fruit trees and flowers, like kumquat trees and peach blossoms, that are considered good luck to decorate their homes and give as gifts. It was exciting to see these being transported on the back of the many motorbikes. I tried to take as many photos as I could but they move quickly (see below). There was an energy in the cities and an excitement among the people that was almost tangible. It was a wonderful time to be there and join in the festivities.

Communities throughout the world are enjoying celebrations, so if you have the chance to participate, join in. I guarantee you will have a fascinating and fun cultural experience.

The BBC interviewed some people and asked what they hope for in the new year. One woman asked for the health of the four generations in her family. A gentleman wished for peace and prosperity for China, while another man hoped he would find a wife in 2015. Whatever you wish for, I hope 2015 brings you and yours health and happiness.
